Since 1975, the BMW 3 Series has defined what a compact sports saloon should be — the balance of driving pleasure and everyday usability that every rival is measured against. Seven generations have carried the badge, each known by an internal code that owners and enthusiasts use as shorthand: E21, E30, E36, E46, E90, F30 and today's G20.
The newest of them — the G20 and late F30 — are the ones you'll typically find as an Approved Used BMW. The earlier cars are now classics, cherished by collectors rather than stocked by BMW Centres. Here is the whole line, generation by generation.
First, the classics.
E21 (1975–1983). Where it began.
The first 3 Series arrived in 1975 as the successor to the much-loved BMW 02 Series. A compact two-door saloon with a driver-focused cockpit, it set the template every 3 Series since has followed: rear-wheel drive, willing engines and precise handling in a practical package. Six-cylinder engines joined during its life, establishing the smooth straight-six as a 3 Series signature — and over a million were built. Today the E21 is a rare sight on UK roads and firmly a collector's car.
E30 (1982–1994). The icon.
Ask an enthusiast to picture a classic BMW and the E30 is likely what they see. The second generation broadened the range enormously: the first four-door saloon, the first Touring, the first convertible — and in 1986, the first BMW M3. Compact dimensions and the famous quad-headlamp face made it a defining car of its era, and it remains one of the most sought-after classic BMWs, with values to match.
E36 (1990–2000). The modern era begins.
Smoother styling and a sophisticated multi-link rear axle brought new polish. The range grew to five body styles, the first 3 Series diesel arrived — and the M3 matured into a six-cylinder everyday performance car.
E46 (1998–2006). The all-rounder.
For many, the high-water mark of classic 3 Series design. The 320d made the sporting diesel saloon mainstream in the UK, and the E46 M3's high-revving straight-six remains one of the most celebrated M engines ever.
E90 (2005–2013). Technology arrives.
iDrive, adaptive headlights and four body styles brought the 3 Series into the connected age, with EfficientDynamics cutting fuel consumption across the range from 2007. Now mostly beyond BMW Centre age — enthusiast territory.

F30 (2012–2019). Turbocharged, every one.
The sixth generation marked a clean break: every engine turbocharged, from the four-cylinder diesels that dominated UK sales to the smooth six-cylinder petrols. The coupé and convertible became the BMW 4 Series, and in 2016 came the BMW 330e — the first plug-in hybrid 3 Series. The F30 is the oldest generation you're likely to find as an Approved Used BMW, and a late, facelifted example makes a compelling first step into 3 Series ownership.
G20 (2019–present). The current 3 Series.
The seventh-generation G20 is the most capable 3 Series yet — larger, stiffer and more technologically advanced, while keeping the balance and precision the badge stands for. The 2022 update brought the BMW Curved Display, placing information and control exactly where you need them. The range suits every kind of driver: the 330e plug-in hybrid for electric everyday running, the M340i and M340d for M Performance pace, and mild-hybrid technology supporting efficiency across much of the range. It's the generation you'll find in the greatest numbers as an Approved Used BMW.

Which 3 Series is right for you?
It depends on what you're looking for — and on what's realistically available. If you want the latest driver assistance, infotainment and efficiency, the current G20 offers the widest Approved Used choice. For the same modern 3 Series experience at a more accessible point, a late F30 delivers the same fundamentals. If electrified running matters most, the 330e plug-in hybrid appears in both generations, while the M340i and M340d bring M Performance pace to the everyday saloon and Touring.
